Balboa Park Wedding Ceremony at Alcazar Garden:

A Sweet, Intimate Celebration

Simple doesn’t mean less meaningful. Some of the most heartfelt weddings I’ve photographed have been small, personal, and incredibly special. When this couple first reached out, they were planning to get married at the San Diego County courthouse. But they also wanted to do a first look and have their own officiant—two things that aren’t allowed at the courthouse. So they asked me for ideas, and I was more than happy to help them find the perfect spot for a small, meaningful wedding.

Since they were dreaming of something simple, intimate, and personal, I suggested a few of my favorite places for elopements: Bayview Park in Coronado, Cuvier Park in La Jolla, Presidio Park, Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, San Dieguito Park in Del Mar—and of course, Alcazar Garden in Balboa Park. It’s hands-down my favorite for small weddings like this one.

In the end, they chose Alcazar Garden—and I’m so glad they did.

Why Alcazar Garden is one of the best spots for a Balboa Park wedding ceremony

This little garden is tucked right in the heart of Balboa Park and it’s full of charm. Rows of colorful flowers, Spanish tiles, and beautiful architecture surround you. It truly feels like a hidden gem—elegant, serene, and just the right size for an intimate wedding. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your ceremony and take portraits afterwards, without feeling rushed.

It’s a public space, so you might see a few people walking by—but I’ve found that most are very respectful. And even on weekends when it tends to be more crowded, you have the area reserved just for your group. If you’re looking for total privacy, it might not be the right fit, but if you’re okay with a few curious parkgoers passing by, it’s a really lovely spot.

What I love most about photographing a wedding ceremony at Balboa Park is that the portrait options are endless. Right after the ceremony, we walked around to a few spots I had already scouted the day before—based on where the light would be best at that time. That’s something I always do for my couples. I want you to feel confident knowing your photos will turn out beautifully. You’re not just hiring me for pretty pictures—you’re getting someone who knows the ins and outs of planning, timing, and light, too.

Balboa Park wedding photos with variety and beauty

Whether you want florals, interesting textures, nature, or architecture—Balboa Park wedding photos give you all of it. We ended our time together at the big fountain, but honestly, I could’ve taken them to five more beautiful spots if we’d had the time. There’s just that much to work with here, and it never gets old. I always feel lucky to shoot in such a gorgeous, historic location right here in San Diego.

After our session, the couple went off to celebrate with their close family at a nearby restaurant—and that’s the beauty of a Balboa Park elopement. You get to have your ceremony somewhere meaningful and relaxed, get amazing photos, and then spend the rest of the day however you like. Whether that’s a meal with loved ones, exploring San Diego, or just enjoying the moment together.
