Best San Diego Wedding Venues: A Photographer’s Guide
Planning to say “I do” in San Diego? Whether you’re a local couple or planning a destination wedding, San Diego has an incredible variety of wedding venues—from oceanfront locations and historic estates to wineries, resorts, and some truly unique spaces.
As a San Diego wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph weddings at every venue featured in this guide. So rather than trying to include every wedding venue in San Diego, I’ve put together a collection of some of my favorites based on my firsthand experience. Along the way, I’ll share what makes each venue special, along with some of the things I appreciate about it from a photographer’s perspective.
If you’re just beginning your venue search, I hope this guide gives you a helpful starting point—and a better idea of what each location actually looks like through the eyes of a wedding photographer.
Martin Johnson House is one of my favorite hidden gems in La Jolla. If you’re looking for an outdoor wedding venue with an intimate, almost backyard feel—but still want beautiful ocean views—it’s definitely worth considering. The property overlooks the La Jolla coastline and offers plenty of variety for photos without having to venture far from your celebration.
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings here is the location. The grounds offer beautiful coastal backdrops, and the pedestrian bridge and surrounding areas give us even more options for portraits. If your timeline allows, we can also head down toward the beach during cocktail hour for a few photos with Scripps Pier and the coastline in the background.

Guest Capacity: small to medium size weddings (up to 130)
Scripps Seaside Forum is one of those San Diego wedding venues where the location really speaks for itself. Set right along the coast in La Jolla, it combines contemporary architecture with expansive ocean views and easy access to the beach—giving you plenty of variety without having to leave the property.
From a photography perspective, I especially love having the beach just steps away. It makes it easy to slip out for portraits during cocktail hour or closer to sunset without taking much time away from your guests. The oceanfront setting also means your guests get to enjoy those beautiful coastal views throughout the celebration.
Because Scripps Seaside Forum is such a popular wedding venue, it’s a good idea to inquire well in advance. One important thing to keep in mind is parking—it’s extremely limited in this area and can be challenging for guests. I highly recommend arranging a shuttle or encouraging guests to use a rideshare service so parking doesn’t become an added stress on your wedding day.

Tom Ham’s Lighthouse is a great choice if you want a waterfront wedding with beautiful views of San Diego Bay and the downtown skyline. Located on Harbor Island, the venue gives you that classic San Diego waterfront setting while still offering the convenience of having your ceremony and reception in one location.
From a photography perspective, the harbor and skyline are what really make this venue stand out. The ceremony site takes full advantage of the view, and there are plenty of opportunities to incorporate the water and downtown skyline into your wedding photos throughout the day.
Tom Ham’s also offers in-house catering and plenty of free parking, which is a big plus for your guests—especially for a waterfront venue in San Diego.

Guests capacity: small to medium size weddings (up to 230)
Cuvier Club is a wonderful option for couples who want a La Jolla wedding with easy access to the coast. The venue itself offers a spacious indoor reception area and a private courtyard, but one of its biggest draws is its proximity to Cuvier Park—also known as the Wedding Bowl—a popular oceanfront ceremony location just a few minutes away.
From a photography perspective, I love the variety this combination gives you. You can exchange vows overlooking the Pacific, take advantage of the coastal scenery around Cuvier Park, and then head down to the beach for portraits without adding a lot of travel time to your wedding day. You can see how this all comes together in this Cuvier Club wedding, where the couple held their ceremony at the Wedding Bowl before celebrating at Cuvier Club and heading to the beach for portraits.
Parking in this part of La Jolla can be limited, so that’s something you’ll want to consider when planning for your guests.

Best Hotel and Resort Wedding Venues
Catamaran Resort and Spa
If you love the idea of a tropical destination wedding without leaving San Diego, Catamaran Resort & Spa is a beautiful option. Located right on Mission Bay, the resort offers a sandy beach for waterfront ceremonies along with lush tropical gardens, koi ponds, waterfalls, and plenty of greenery throughout the property.
From a photography perspective, I love the variety here. We can go from tropical garden portraits to photos along the bay without ever leaving the resort. The beach is especially beautiful later in the day, when we can take advantage of the softer light and views across Mission Bay.
It’s also a convenient choice for destination weddings since you and your guests can stay right at the resort and enjoy the beach and Mission Bay throughout the wedding weekend.
La Valencia Hotel is one of La Jolla’s most iconic wedding venues. Known locally as the “Pink Lady,” this historic hotel combines Spanish-style architecture, old Hollywood charm, and beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. With so much character already built into the property, it doesn’t take a lot of added décor to create an elegant setting for a wedding.
From a photography perspective, there’s plenty to work with here—from the architecture and colorful details around the hotel to the ocean views and surrounding La Jolla scenery. The ballroom, with its black-and-white checkered floor, also gives receptions a completely different look from the outdoor spaces.
La Valencia is especially convenient for destination weddings since you and your guests can stay right at the hotel and enjoy everything La Jolla has to offer. It also makes it easy to turn the celebration into a full wedding weekend with a rehearsal dinner, post-wedding brunch, or a few extra days by the coast.

Rancho Bernardo Inn is a beautiful option for couples who want an elegant wedding venue that still feels relaxed and inviting. The property offers a mix of lush gardens, mature trees, Spanish-style courtyards, golf course views, and elegant indoor spaces, giving you plenty of options for both your ceremony and reception.
From a photography perspective, one of the things I love most about Rancho Bernardo Inn is the variety. There are so many different settings for portraits throughout the property, from the gardens and white rose-covered pathways to the courtyards and open golf course views. Having that much variety in one location also means we can create very different looks without taking you away from your guests for long.
With accommodations, dining, and event spaces all on the property, Rancho Bernardo Inn is also a great option for destination weddings or couples who want to make a full weekend out of their celebration.

The Thursday Club is a charming historic wedding venue tucked into a residential neighborhood in Point Loma. It offers a nice combination of indoor and outdoor spaces, with a beautiful garden, ocean views, and a reception hall filled with character—from the high ceilings and antique chandeliers to the original wood floors.
From a photography perspective, I love that you get the feel of a coastal San Diego wedding without actually being on the beach. The garden provides a beautiful setting for ceremonies and portraits, while the balcony and surrounding grounds give us additional options throughout the day. And if your timeline allows, Sunset Cliffs is only a few minutes away for another completely different backdrop. Another big plus is the free parking, which makes things much easier for your guests.

Tucked away in the heart of La Jolla, Darlington House is a historic Spanish-style estate that feels more like an intimate private residence than a traditional wedding venue. The property is full of character, with colorful Spanish tile, fountains, wrought-iron details, lush greenery, citrus trees, and a spacious brick courtyard that can be transformed for an outdoor reception.
From a photography perspective, I love all the little pockets throughout the property. The architecture, greenery, courtyards, and colorful details give us plenty of variety without having to go far, and the quaint library inside offers another completely different setting. If you’d like some coastal portraits as well, Windansea Beach is just a few minutes away.
Another nice aspect of choosing Darlington House is that rental proceeds support the Social Service League of La Jolla and its housing programs for seniors.

Grand Tradition Estate & Gardens in Fallbrook feels like a private oasis, with beautifully landscaped grounds and two very different settings to choose from. The Beverly Mansion offers a more classic and elegant atmosphere with manicured lawns and a lake, while Arbor Terrace has a lush, tropical feel surrounded by greenery and waterfalls.
From a photography perspective, Grand Tradition is one of those venues where there’s no shortage of beautiful backdrops. The gardens, water features, mature trees, and architecture give us plenty of variety for portraits without ever leaving the property. I especially love photographing around Arbor Terrace, where the tropical landscaping and waterfalls create a setting you don’t find at many other San Diego wedding venues.
Grand Tradition has also been hosting weddings for decades, and that experience shows. The staff has always been wonderful to work with, and I have to give a special mention to the prime rib buffet—it’s still one of my favorite wedding meals!

Green Gables Estate in San Marcos is a beautiful choice for couples who love a romantic garden setting with plenty of vintage character. The property is filled with lush greenery, rose-covered arbors, twinkle lights, and an eclectic mix of rustic and French-country details that give the venue a warm, intimate feel.
From a photography perspective, there’s so much variety throughout the property. The gardens and tree-lined areas provide beautiful natural backdrops, while the vintage furnishings and architecture give us plenty of opportunities for something completely different. The getting-ready spaces are especially fun—the bridal parlor is beautiful, and the groom’s vintage speakeasy has a personality all its own.
Green Gables is the sister property to Twin Oaks Estate, so the two share a similar romantic, garden-inspired feel. Green Gables is the larger of the two, making it a good option if you love that style but need room for a bigger guest list.

An enchanting historical castle straight out of a fairytale, exuding rustic charm and surrounded by majestic oak trees. I’ve heard that the staff at Personal Touch will make you feel like a princess, and believe me, this place is where all of your wedding dreams will come true. From a photographer’s vantage point, there are no bad angles here! If you were to ask me which ceremony site to choose, I’d wholeheartedly recommend the oak tree ceremony site. I’m always in awe of the light here at sunset. Mt. Woodson Castle is nothing short of magical!

Twin Oaks Estate
What do I adore about Twin Oaks Estate? Well, where do I begin? When it comes to wedding venues, this place is simply extraordinary. From the moment you step foot here, you’ll feel like you stepped into a hidden enchanted garden, a vintage gem like no other. The gardens exude an undeniable charm with their twinkling rose arbors and soothing waterfall, offering endless opportunities for capturing stunning wedding photographs. What I love most about this place is its small and intimate atmosphere. Additionally, your getting ready photos will stand out because you’ll have access to the on-site salon and bridal parlor, which is actually a historic schoolhouse. This venue is a top pick among San Diego’s best wedding venues!

Best Industrial Wedding Venue
Brick
Industrial enthusiasts will find Brick, located in historic Liberty Station, to be one of the best San Diego wedding venues. There are so many reasons to love this unique space, even if the name doesn’t quite capture its charm. Imagine a cool, industrial-chic warehouse vibe with tall open ceilings, rustic brick walls that add character, and tons of natural light flooding in through multiple windows.
And here’s the best part – you can rent it for a whopping 24 hours, with no noise restrictions or curfew. Plus, it’s pet-friendly, so your furry buddy can celebrate with you! This place is your blank slate, where you can turn your wedding vision into reality. From the decorations to the libations, to choosing your favorite vendors, you’ve got the creative reins to make it uniquely yours.
Additionally, you’ll be happy to know there’s plenty of parking, so your guests won’t have to worry about finding a spot. Since it’s pretty close to the airport, it’ll be super convenient for your out-of-town guests. Talk about a win-win for everyone!

Japanese Friendship Garden
Also located in Balboa Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden offers sprawling gardens, serene koi ponds, and cascading waterfalls, all set in a tranquil and Zen-like environment that would even impress Mr. Miyagi! And let’s talk about those fantastic photo opportunities, especially during cherry blossom season – pure magic. Plus, here’s a standout feature: they allow wedding receptions to keep the party going until 11 pm. That’s a definite bonus because there’s nothing worse than having to call it a night on the the festivities too early.

Best Unique Wedding Venue
Ever dreamed of throwing a massive party with all your friends at the San Diego Zoo or Safari Park? Well, here’s your golden opportunity! Envision saying your vows against a panoramic backdrop of giraffes and rhinos. And let’s not forget about the incredible photo ops during cocktail hour when they bring out the exotic animals. If you’re a fan of safari creatures or hold a special place in your heart for animal conservation, this venue deserves some serious consideration.
Just a heads up, everything is quite spread out, so make sure to allocate some extra time in your wedding timeline. Both you and your wedding party, not to mention your wedding photographer, will likely need carts to get around. But believe me, it’s all worth it for those epic bragging rights!

Bernardo Winery
Tucked in North San Diego, Bernardo Winery is SoCal’s oldest winery and a stunning blend of history and rustic charm—perfect for weddings of any size. Say “I do” under a garden pergola, twinkling bistro lights, or inside the 130-year-old barrel room lined with redwood vats.
With on-site suites for getting ready, in-house catering, and a fantastic selection of wines and craft beers, your day will be as seamless as it is memorable. And from a photographer’s perspective? The portrait spots here are an absolute dream.
