The comfort of a familiar space, the closeness of loved ones, and the freedom to make the day your own—it all creates an atmosphere that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. This particular micro-wedding was no exception. Hosted in a friend’s backyard, it was a beautiful, heartfelt celebration full of meaning and intention.

The couple gathered their closest family and friends for a backyard ceremony that embraced a relaxed, bohemian vibe. It was the kind of intimate wedding where every detail felt personal. They included a handfasting ritual and gifted beads to their loved ones— moments that reflected the deep connection they share and the community that supports them.

Since their wedding was so intimate, we had the flexibility to plan for portraits during golden hour—my favorite time of day to shoot. We headed to Presidio Park, where the soft light filtered through the trees in a peaceful, grassy forest setting. It was the perfect backdrop for their boho style and gave them time to slow down and soak in the “just married” feeling before returning to their guests.

After portraits, we returned to the backyard, where the celebration continued with dancing on the patio, laughter, and great company. It was the kind of evening that reminds me why I love photographing intimate weddings and elopements so much.

Whether you’re planning a micro-wedding, backyard wedding, or an elopement with just your closest people, this day was a beautiful reminder that the most meaningful celebrations are often the most personal. Sometimes, the most memorable weddings are the ones that simply feel like home.

Many venues around San Diego offer outdoor areas perfect for micro-weddings, elopements, and intimate gatherings, giving you the charm of a backyard feel with a little extra support and structure.  You can even explore city-managed parks and historic locations available for wedding rentals through the City of San Diego for a scenic and budget-friendly option.
