San Diego is home to some truly beautiful Catholic churches for wedding ceremonies, from historic missions and cathedrals to the iconic Immaculata on the University of San Diego campus.
As a San Diego wedding photographer, I’ve photographed Catholic weddings at churches throughout the area and have seen firsthand how different each one can be. Beyond the architecture, there are also practical things to consider, including ceremony schedules, marriage requirements, photography restrictions, and where you’ll be able to take portraits before or after the ceremony.
If you’re planning a Catholic wedding in San Diego, here are five beautiful churches to consider, along with helpful planning information and some of my own photography tips for each location.
The Immaculata
Arguably one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in San Diego, The Immaculata is located on the University of San Diego campus. Its Spanish Renaissance architecture, iconic bell tower, blue mosaic-tiled dome, and stained glass make it an impressive setting for a Catholic wedding ceremony.
One of the things I especially love about photographing weddings at The Immaculata is the variety available right outside the church. The surrounding USD campus has beautiful courtyards, archways, fountains, manicured lawns, and flower beds, giving couples plenty of options for portraits without having to go far after the ceremony.
Because The Immaculata is a popular wedding church and has specific requirements for Catholic marriages, it’s a good idea to begin planning well in advance.

Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church
Located in the heart of Little Italy, Our Lady of the Rosary is a historic Catholic church with deep roots in San Diego’s Italian community. Founded by Italian immigrants in the 1920s, the church is especially striking inside, with colorful religious paintings, stained glass windows, ornate details, and traditional Italian statues throughout the sanctuary.
From a photography standpoint, the interior offers a completely different look from many of San Diego’s other Catholic churches. There is so much color and detail throughout the church, which creates a beautiful backdrop for both the ceremony and wider photographs that show the setting. Its Little Italy location also puts couples right in the middle of downtown San Diego, which opens up additional possibilities for portraits between the ceremony and reception depending on the wedding-day timeline.

Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala
Founded in 1769, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was the first of California’s 21 missions and offers a setting that feels distinctly different from San Diego’s larger Catholic churches. Its white stucco walls, historic bell tower, arched walkways, and peaceful mission grounds create a beautiful setting for a Catholic wedding ceremony.
The grounds are also one of the things that make the Mission especially nice for wedding photography. There are several different areas for portraits just steps from the church, including the historic architecture, gardens, archways, and courtyards. This makes it possible to get plenty of variety in your wedding portraits without needing to travel to another location after the ceremony.
Couples planning to marry at the Mission should begin the process well in advance. The parish has its own requirements for marriage preparation and scheduling, with priority generally given to registered parishioners. For current ceremony times, fees, and marriage requirements, I recommend contacting the Mission directly.

St. Joseph Cathedral
Located in San Diego’s Cortez Hill neighborhood, St. Joseph Cathedral has served San Diego’s Catholic community since the 19th century. The cathedral’s grand interior features soaring columns, high wooden ceilings, intricate woodwork, stained glass windows, and a long center aisle that creates an impressive setting for a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony.
For photography, the scale of the cathedral is one of its standout features. The long aisle and spacious sanctuary allow for beautiful wide photographs that capture the architecture along with the ceremony itself, while the stained glass and ornate interior add plenty of visual interest to the images.
Because St. Joseph Cathedral is located in downtown San Diego, couples may also want to plan a separate location for some of their wedding portraits. Depending on the ceremony and reception locations, this can be worked into the photography timeline so there is enough time for portraits without feeling rushed.

St. Gabriel Catholic Church
Located in Poway, about 20 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, St. Gabriel Catholic Church offers a more contemporary setting than some of San Diego’s historic Catholic churches. The sanctuary features soaring ceilings, warm architectural details, and a spacious, open design that creates a beautiful setting for a Catholic wedding ceremony.
From a photography perspective, the church’s size and open layout provide plenty of room to capture the ceremony from different angles while remaining respectful and unobtrusive. Having photographed a wedding at St. Gabriel, I also love the way the architectural lines of the sanctuary frame the ceremony and draw your eye toward the altar.
Couples planning to marry at St. Gabriel should begin the marriage preparation process well in advance of their wedding date. The parish also has a reception hall available, giving couples the option of holding both their ceremony and reception at the same location.

Catholic Wedding Photography FAQ
Can photographers move around during a Catholic wedding ceremony?
It depends on the church. Some Catholic churches allow photographers to move quietly between designated areas, while others have specific restrictions on where photographers can stand during the ceremony. I always check the church’s photography guidelines ahead of time and work within those rules while still making sure the important moments are covered.
This is also one reason I often recommend having a second photographer for larger Catholic weddings. When movement is limited, having photographers positioned in different areas of the church makes it possible to capture more perspectives without creating unnecessary distractions during the Mass.
Is flash photography allowed during a Catholic wedding ceremony?
Flash policies vary by church, although many Catholic churches restrict or discourage flash during the ceremony. Church interiors can also be quite dark, so your photographer should be comfortable working in low-light conditions without having to rely on flash.
I photograph the ceremony as unobtrusively as possible so the focus remains on the Mass rather than the photography.
How far in advance should you plan a Catholic wedding in San Diego?
It’s a good idea to contact your church early in the planning process. Catholic weddings typically require marriage preparation, and individual parishes may have their own requirements, ceremony times, and scheduling policies. Popular churches and dates can book well in advance, so I recommend confirming your ceremony date with the church before making other plans that depend on a specific date or time.
Since policies can change, always confirm the most current information directly with the church where you plan to marry.
Catholic Churches in San Diego
Once you’ve chosen your church, the next step is figuring out how the ceremony fits into the rest of your wedding day. Since most Catholic churches don’t host the reception, you’ll want to consider travel time between the church and reception venue, along with where other parts of the day will take place.
Timing can be especially important with a Catholic wedding because ceremony times are often set by the church and may not line up perfectly with the best time of day for outdoor portraits. Depending on your ceremony time and locations, some portraits may work better before the ceremony, while others can be planned afterward on the church grounds or at another location.
This is something I help my couples plan ahead of time so we can create a photography timeline that works with the church schedule while still allowing plenty of time for the photographs that are important to them.
