Emmanuel and Natalia’s Courthouse Wedding

I met Emmanuel when he came across my blog while planning his courthouse wedding here in San Diego. At first, he wasn’t planning on having professional photos, but after seeing how beautiful courthouse wedding photos can look, he decided to reach out—and I’m so glad he did.

It’s actually not uncommon for grooms to contact me after realizing just how meaningful and photogenic a courthouse wedding can be. There’s something about the simplicity of it all that really lets the focus stay where it belongs—on the two of you.

The Couple

Emmanuel and Natalia were so sweet together. Within the first few minutes of meeting them, it was obvious they were completely smitten.

When Emmanuel first inquired, he shared how he proposed to Natalia in a quiet corner of the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris… so romantic, right? You could feel that same kind of intimacy and intention woven throughout their entire wedding day.

Their Civil Ceremony at the County Administration Center

Their ceremony took place outdoors at the County Administration Center, right along the waterfront. If you’ve never been, it’s one of those places that really surprises people—it doesn’t feel like what you’d expect from a courthouse setting at all.

They said their “I do’s” under the West Arbor, a beautiful pergola covered in bougainvillea, with views of the harbor and even the Star of India in the distance. It was a sunny San Diego day, and everything felt relaxed and joyful.

One of the things I love about this location is how flexible it is. If you choose the outdoor option, you can invite as many guests as you’d like—which was perfect for Emmanuel and Natalia since they had several friends and family there to celebrate with them.

The ceremony itself is short and sweet (usually about 5–8 minutes), so if you’re thinking about personal vows, a great option is to read them afterward. If the arbor is still available, you can stay there, or we can find a quieter spot nearby—which often turns into some really special, intimate moments.

A Quick Note on Weather

If you’re planning a courthouse ceremony in San Diego during the rainy season, I always recommend booking the outdoor option.

If it rains, ceremonies are simply moved indoors—but if you book indoors ahead of time and the weather ends up being beautiful, you won’t be able to switch. It’s a small detail, but one that can make a big difference in your overall experience.

Portraits Around the Courthouse

After their ceremony, we spent some time capturing portraits with their guests, followed by a few moments just for the two of them.

Another reason I love photographing civil ceremonies at this location is the variety—it’s easy to find beautiful backdrops for both large group photos and more intimate couple portraits, all within a short walking distance.

We were a little tight on time (which happens more often than you’d think—appointments and paperwork can sometimes run longer), but we made the most of it and still captured some really lovely images.

If you’re planning your own day, it’s definitely something to keep in mind when building your timeline.

Making the Most of Your Courthouse Wedding

One of the things I always tell couples is that a courthouse wedding can be whatever you want it to be.

Some couples keep it simple and intimate, while others go all out—wearing a full wedding gown and tux, adding a getting-ready portion, or even heading to another location afterward for more portraits. I’ve had couples continue their day at nearby spots like Balboa Park, which adds even more variety to their gallery.

That’s really the beauty of a civil ceremony—you’re not tied to a traditional venue or timeline. You have the freedom to create a day that feels true to you.
