Every once in a while, a courthouse wedding comes along that feels completely one-of-a-kind. That was exactly the case when I photographed a Halloween wedding at the San Diego County Administration Center. The couple chose Halloween because it’s their favorite holiday — and they leaned into it in the best possible way. Think vintage-goth attire, county staff in full costumes, and a lighthearted, whimsical ceremony that felt intimate and delightfully unexpected.
If you’re currently planning your own ceremony at the county building, you might also find my Ultimate San Diego Courthouse Wedding Guide helpful. It covers everything from costs and scheduling to photo tips and what the ceremony is actually like.

A ceremony with personality
Courthouse weddings don’t have to be buttoned-up and predictable. This one proved that beautifully. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was joyful — people were laughing, staff were smiling behind their masks and capes, and the whole building seemed to be in on the celebration. The officiant read a Halloween-themed ceremony that struck the perfect balance between playful and sincere.

Vintage goth: a look that fit the day
The couple’s vintage-goth outfits were stunning and so true to them. The bride’s style was bold but timeless; she wanted photos that didn’t look like everyone else’s courthouse gallery. Her enthusiasm for architecture drew my attention to the Administration Building itself — she really made me see the courthouse with fresh eyes. The carved details, the lines, and the historic character of the space became part of the story we told with light and composition.

Skipping the expected: portraits at the Santa Fe Depot
Instead of the usual Balboa Park portraits afterwards, they wanted something edgier and more personal. We headed to the Santa Fe Depot for portraits, and it was the perfect choice. The depot is a historic Spanish-style train station in downtown San Diego, opened in 1915, with so much character. The grand exterior and large waiting room with high ceilings and vintage fixtures all made it such a great backdrop for photos. It was the perfect mix of historic and timeless, and it fit their vibe so well.
Moving beyond predictable locations is one of my favorite parts of San Diego County Administration Center weddings — you get to create something unique.

Why courthouse weddings are still so creative
I love courthouse weddings because, even within the structure of the ceremony, there’s still room for couples to make the day feel like their own. And one of my favorite things is that no two courthouse weddings are ever the same — every couple brings their own personality, style, and energy to the day.
While you can’t write your own vows at the San Diego courthouse, you can add personal touches through your outfits, your flowers, and especially the locations you choose for photos afterward. This Halloween wedding was the perfect example. The couple embraced their favorite holiday, the courthouse staff joined in with costumes and a themed ceremony, and the whole day had a playful, one-of-a-kind energy. And afterward, we used some of the city’s beautiful architecture to create portraits that were truly unique to them.

My role: helping you feel seen

As a photographer who specializes in San Diego courthouse weddings, my goal is to help couples feel comfortable, confident, and seen — whether their vision is classic or a little offbeat. I want people to leave their session thinking: “Yes, that’s us.” When couples bring personality into their day, the photographs show it. I’m there to guide lighting and composition, but mostly to capture the real moments that matter — the laughs, the glances, and the little details that make a wedding uniquely theirs.
Courthouse Wedding Ideas for a Unique San Diego Celebration
Choose a meaningful date. Whether it’s an anniversary, a lucky number, or a favorite holiday, your date can add a personal touch to the day.
Express yourself through what you wear. Since the ceremony itself is structured, your attire is the best way to add personality, whether that’s classic, modern, colorful, or completely outside the box.
Pick a portrait location that fits the light and the look you want. Balboa Park is always a great option, but there are a few nearby spots — like the waterfront or Santa Fe Depot — that can work beautifully depending on the time of day.
For more planning help, my Ultimate San Diego Courthouse Wedding Guide walks you through the entire process, including costs, timelines, and what to expect on the day of your ceremony.
