The Santee courthouse in East County (the Santee County Recorder’s Office) is one of several places in San Diego County where couples can have a civil wedding ceremony.

With just a small gathering of family present, the day felt easy and natural — the kind of celebration where the focus stays exactly where it should be: on the couple and the moment they’re stepping into together.

The Santee courthouse hosts civil ceremonies one Saturday each month, making it a convenient option for couples in East County who want something simple without the formality of a traditional wedding venue.

A Ceremony Surrounded by Family

The ceremony area at the Santee courthouse is a small outdoor space next to the county office building. It works well for a simple, intimate ceremony with close family and friends, but the surrounding area isn’t especially scenic for portraits. Because of that, many couples choose to head to another nearby location for photos afterward.

That’s exactly what this couple decided to do.

Portraits at Balboa Park

After the ceremony, we headed to Balboa Park for portraits — one of my favorite places in San Diego for wedding photos because there’s so much variety and beauty in one location.

We weren’t entirely sure what the weather would do that day. Rain had been in the forecast, but we ended up getting lucky with a soft, overcast spring day, which created beautiful even light for portraits.

The timing also turned out to be perfect for the gardens. The roses at the Balboa Park Rose Garden were vibrant and in bloom, which isn’t always guaranteed. Depending on the season they can sometimes be sparse or dried out, but on this day they looked beautiful.

There were also a couple of trees nearby with soft pink blossoms, adding a subtle springtime touch to the setting.

One of my favorite things about courthouse weddings is how personal they can feel, and the bride’s style reflected that beautifully.

She wore a flowing green maxi dress with a relaxed bohemian feel, and her purple hair — accented with delicate baby’s breath — added a playful and colorful touch that looked amazing against the vibrant roses.

Her look was a great reminder of something I always tell courthouse couples: there are no expectations for what you should wear. Some couples choose traditional wedding attire, while others go for something more relaxed and personal.
